THE CRAFTSBURY FUNNERY
This summer is different. We all know why! We won't have a scrum like the one you see below. Sad!
But we'll meet in a magical online space of our own devise. We'll do the best we can to create, as we always do, a pulsing and powerful center of the known universe. The Funnery will happen—in an awesome many-platformed space whose product will be, like, permanent, and full of surprises.
One big surprise this year: The Vermont Council on the HUMANITIES is sponsoring our work. We are going to use "Merchant of Venice" as an opportunity to dialogue about hate speech and bigotry in general. We can't wait for these discussions. The characters in the play will guide us. You can start learning more about these issues on our YouTube Channel. It's up and running; take a look!

"Thank you for giving me the best two weeks of my year. When I came to Funnery this summer I was tired and stressed, I just wanted to lock myself in my room and sleep for 100 years. When I left camp, I had discovered who I was outside of who my school had made me be, and I was stronger and confident and ready for a new start in life. " ~A Camper

Sometimes a pandemic can yield an unexpected benefit. Our taking the camp online in 2020 has opened up an opportunity to collaborate with the Thespo youth theatre company in Mumbai, India. Check out the AWESOME video on their homepage. Wow! This summer, while we're rehearsing scenes and having great discussions, we hope to have some great new friends to meet and to work with, joining us from 8000 miles away. It's a foot in the virtual door, till the time that these new campers can be with us in person.
This summer, it's "Merchant of Venice." This summer, we are tackling head on the themes of bigotry, hate speech, scapegoating, & violence. Here is THE TEXT of the play. |
